Parent Links is a Support Group created by parents to help each other with the challenges they face in helping their children who are either on the Autism Spectrum or have Social Cognitive Issues. Our focus is Advocacy through Education; we believe we can make a difference in our children’s lives by helping to educate families, our schools, and the community at large. These Disorders are very trying on the families that are facing them because they are “silent” disorders. To look at these children there are no outward indicators that there is anything wrong, but beneath the surface, these individuals are different in some very distinct ways. It’s these differences that we take for granted each and every day in our interactions with other people. We can “read” most individuals we interact with; are they listening, are they interested, are they happy, are they angry? Everyone gives non-verbal cues during interactions that these individuals just don’t see or process appropriately. A lot of these individuals are also aware that something is different, but they just can’t put their finger on it, which compounds the issues with frustration, which often leads to anxiety and depression. Children are often looked upon as doing willfully inappropriate things, when in actuality they just don’t understand the social norms society has established. Imagine having a conversation about something that excites you with another person and that person has no interest in what you are talking about whatsoever. Most individuals are able to pick up on the non-verbal cues the other person gives of disinterest and will change the topic or end the discussion. Individuals on the Autism Spectrum or with Social Cognitive issues will continue on with the topic and be unrelenting in the topic regardless of non-verbal and sometimes even verbal cues. Further, they often do not understand what went wrong when the other person becomes frustrated and disengages altogether. We as parents and caregivers each want to see our children grow and become successful, interactive members of society. In order for this to occur they need help and understanding from their families, schools, and communities. Parent Links was formed to help achieve this very goal. Through supporting and educating each other, our schools, and our communities; we are striving to make a positive difference so that our children will succeed and become integrated members of society. |
